Best Lakes in the Northern Twin Cities for Waterfront Homes

Best Lakes in the Northern Twin Cities for Waterfront Homes

By Tim Ornell | Ornell Group Real Estate

When people think about lake living in Minnesota, one name usually comes up first.

Lake Minnetonka.

But many buyers relocating to the Twin Cities eventually discover that some of the best waterfront living is actually found in the northern suburbs.

These lakes offer strong communities, great schools, and a quieter lifestyle while still being close to Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

Here are a few lakes buyers consistently explore.

White Bear Lake

White Bear Lake is one of the most well-known lake communities in the Twin Cities.

The lake offers a mix of historic cottages, renovated lake homes, and newer construction. Its downtown area includes restaurants, coffee shops, and marinas that give the community a true lake-town feel.

For many buyers, White Bear Lake becomes the starting point when exploring lake living in the northern suburbs.

Bald Eagle Lake

Just north of White Bear Lake sits Bald Eagle Lake.

The lake offers wide water views and a more relaxed boating environment. Many homes sit on larger lots, and the surrounding communities are part of the White Bear Lake Area School District.

For buyers who want a quieter lake with great access to the city, Bald Eagle often becomes a strong option.

Turtle Lake

Turtle Lake is one of the most private and sought-after lakes in the northern suburbs.

Located in Shoreview, the lake is known for clear water and beautiful residential lots.

Inventory here is extremely limited, and opportunities to purchase rarely appear.

Centerville Lake, Reshanau & Peltier Lake

Centerville Lake sits within the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes.

Much of the shoreline around the lake is protected parkland, which gives the area a natural and peaceful feel compared to many metro lakes.

Buyers often appreciate the balance between recreation and privacy.

Choosing the Right Lake

Every lake offers a slightly different lifestyle.

Some buyers prioritize boating and activity. Others focus on privacy, water clarity, or school districts.

Understanding those differences helps buyers narrow the search and ultimately find the lake community that fits them best.
