Two lakes often come up when buyers begin exploring lake living in the Twin Cities.
Lake Minnetonka and White Bear Lake.

Size and Activity
Lake Minnetonka is enormous.
With over 14,000 acres and more than 100 miles of shoreline, it supports a large boating community and a very active lake lifestyle.
White Bear Lake is smaller but still substantial at around 2,300 acres.
The boating scene is active, but it tends to feel slightly calmer than Minnetonka.
Community Feel
White Bear Lake has a classic lake-town atmosphere.
Its downtown area includes restaurants, coffee shops, and small businesses that give the area a strong sense of community.
Lake Minnetonka is surrounded by several different towns and neighborhoods, each with its own character.
Property Styles
Minnetonka has a large number of luxury estates and modern waterfront homes.
White Bear Lake offers a mix of historic lake homes, renovated cottages, and newer construction.
Both lakes offer beautiful properties, but the architectural styles can feel quite different.
Location
White Bear Lake sits northeast of Saint Paul and offers easy access to both Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul.
Lake Minnetonka sits west of Minneapolis and tends to attract buyers who work on the west side of the metro.
Which Lake Is Better?
The answer depends entirely on what someone wants from lake living.
Some buyers prefer the scale and activity of Minnetonka.
Others are drawn to the charm and community feel of White Bear Lake.
