How Far Is White Bear Lake From Downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul?

Closer than most relocating buyers assume.

The actual numbers

White Bear Lake sits roughly 15 miles from downtown Saint Paul via Interstate 35E. Outside rush hour, that's a 15 to 20 minute drive. During peak commute times, plan on 25 to 35 minutes. Downtown Minneapolis is a bit further, roughly 20 to 25 miles via Interstate 694, typically 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic and time of day.

What that means in practice

If you work primarily in Saint Paul, White Bear Lake is genuinely one of the easier lake commutes in the metro, closer to a suburban office park drive than a lake-house sacrifice. If your job is in Minneapolis, it's a real commute, but still well within what most relocating professionals are used to from other metro areas.

No light rail, so plan around a vehicle

White Bear Lake doesn't have direct light rail access. Bus routes exist, but for most residents this is a car commute, not a train commute. If you're relocating from a city where you didn't need a car daily, factor that adjustment into your decision alongside the drive time itself.

What this means for you

If commute time is a deciding factor in your search, White Bear Lake, Bald Eagle Lake, and the surrounding corridor along 35E and 694 generally give you the shortest drive of the lakes I work, with Centerville and the Rice Creek Chain running a bit further out. I can pull the actual drive time from a specific address you're considering to your specific workplace before you make any assumptions based on the lake name alone.
